Short biography of the Russian Expressionist painter Wassily Kandinsky. |

The Russian Expressionist painter Wassily Kandinsky born in Moscow, Russia, 1866. He moved in 1871 with his family to Odessa. There he had his first lessons in painting and drawing. He went back to Moscow in 1886 and entered the Moscow University. Kandinsky traveled in 1896 to Munich and start to studied at the school of Anton Azbe. There he met his close friends Marianne von Werefkin and Alexis von Jawlensky. Later in 1900 he stayed at the Academy of Art in Munich under the teacher Franz von Stuck. Together with other Avant garde painters he founded the association Phalanx in 1901. He became the director of the Phalanx School of Painting. Wassily Kandinsky traveled a lot, visited Switzerland, Holland, North Africa, France and Italy. He returned a several times back to Russian. The most of the time he spent in the Alps of Bavarian, Murnau. With his friend, the German painter Franz Marc he started the foundation Der Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) in 1911. When the first World War began he went back to Russia. In 1921 he came to Berlin and never went back to Russia. The Russian painter became a world famous artist in the 1920-30s. He moved to France in 1933 and lived near Paris in Neuilly sur Seine. His work shop there was visited by many artists. The Russian Expressionist painter Wassily Kandinsky died in Neuilly sur Seine, France, 1944. |
